What to Do in São Miguel in 5 Days: The Complete Itinerary to See Everything

Five days in São Miguel is the perfect amount of time to explore the island without rushing — with time to wander through the villages of the northeast, swim in the lakes, catch a sunset at the viewpoints and sit in a restaurant discovering Azorean cuisine at your own pace.

The ideal base is Ponta Delgada. Hire a car on the first day: you will need it.

Day 1: Ponta Delgada — the Azorean capital

The first day is for recovering from the journey and discovering Ponta Delgada at your own pace. This city of 70,000 people surprises with the discreet elegance of its black basalt and white lime architecture.

Start with the historic centre: the Portas da Cidade, the Praça do Município, the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião. Continue along the old waterfront to the Forte de São Brás and visit the Museu Carlos Machado to get historical context on the Azores.

In the afternoon, walk along Rua Marquês da Praia e Monforte to buy regional products and, before dinner, have a beer at Mercado da Graça.

Tip: If you arrive early, combine your city visit with a walk around Jardim António Borges — the most secret romantic garden in Ponta Delgada.

Day 2: Sete Cidades — early morning for the magic

Wake up before the sun. The early morning light, before 8:30am, is completely different from the hours that follow: the caldera is often covered in a gentle mist that dissolves slowly, creating unique views.

The first stop is Miradouro da Vista do Rei. Take your photos, feel the silence, and head to Boca do Inferno and Grota do Inferno before the crowds arrive. Then descend to the village of Sete Cidades.

In the village, hire a kayak to explore Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde from the inside. When you are on the water, with the caldera hillsides surrounding you in silence, you completely lose track of time. There is also bike hire and horse riding along the lake perimeter.

Day 3: Furnas — the volcanic heart of the island

Reserve the full day for Furnas. Leave early in the morning to arrive at the caldeiras of Lagoa das Furnas around 11:30am.

At noon, witness the ritual of unearthing the pots of Furnas Stew. Have lunch at Tony's or Miroma — order the full stew, with all the cuts of meat, sausages and vegetables that have been cooking for 7 hours in the heat of the earth.

In the afternoon, visit Terra Nostra Park and end the day in the park's orange thermal pool or at Poça da Dona Beija, which is open until 11pm.

Tip: If you have energy and light left, climb to Miradouro do Pico do Ferro for a panoramic view over the Furnas valley — a viewpoint that few visitors discover.

Day 4: The wild northeast

The northeast of São Miguel is the least touristy and most authentic part of the island. The villages are small, the roads winding, and the landscape is a succession of cliffs, coves and hydrangea fields.

Start at Miradouro de Santa Iria on the north coast, where the wild Atlantic crashes against 200-metre cliffs. Follow the EN1-1a towards the northeast — the north coastal road is one of the most beautiful in the Azores.

In Nordeste, stop at Ponta do Sossego — a viewpoint in a free botanical garden with giant hydrangeas. Next, visit the Gorreana Tea Plantation — the oldest in Europe (since 1883). Entry and tea tasting are free.

On the way back, stop at Caldeira Velha for a dip in the natural hot pools.

Day 5: Lagoa do Fogo and Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo

The last day begins with Lagoa do Fogo — perhaps the wildest and most impressive of all São Miguel's lakes. Leave early in the morning, when the lake may be wrapped in a mysterious mist that gradually clears.

If you are feeling fit, do the PRC02-SMI trail (11 km, 4 to 5 hours). In summer, use the shuttle bus (€5) to access the area.

After lunch, head to Vila Franca do Campo and take the boat (10 minutes) to the Ilhéu — a natural pool formed by the crater of a submerged volcano. The waters are crystal clear, the floor of white sand, and the feeling of swimming inside a volcanic crater is completely surreal. In summer, places are limited — book online in advance.

Practical tips for 5 days in São Miguel

  • Hire a car on the first day: the island has buses but the frequency is low.
  • Book in advance in summer: Ilhéu de Vila Franca, whale watching and Furnas restaurants fill up quickly.
  • Pack layers: the temperature varies greatly between the coast (25 °C) and the interior (15–18 °C). A fleece and rain jacket are essential.
  • The Meteazores app gives forecasts by point on the island — essential for planning viewpoint visits.
  • Visit a local supermarket: Azorean cheeses, yoghurts and sausages are often better and cheaper than in tourist shops.

Five days in São Miguel pass quickly. But when you leave, you will know you really got to know the island — not just its postcards, but its secrets, its quiet villages and its genuine hospitality.
