The Best Viewpoints in São Miguel: 10 Panoramas That Will Take Your Breath Away

São Miguel has over 60 official viewpoints — and a dozen of them rank among the most breathtaking vistas in the entire Atlantic. Here, nature needs no invitation: volcanic lakes, intensely green cliffs, wild coastlines and steaming caldeiras compete for your attention at every kilometre.

1. Miradouro da Vista do Rei — Sete Cidades

It is the most famous of all and for good reason. Vista do Rei owes its name to a visit by King D. Carlos I in 1901 and offers a 180-degree panorama over the Sete Cidades caldera, with Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde shimmering below, separated by their stone bridge.

It is one of the busiest spots on the island — go before 9:30am or in the late afternoon, when the golden sunset light transforms the landscape. There is a free car park and a café with a terrace right next to it.

How to get there: 25 km from Ponta Delgada via the EN9-1. Follow the signs to the summit.

2. Miradouro da Boca do Inferno — Sete Cidades

A few minutes' drive from Vista do Rei, Boca do Inferno offers a different angle over the caldera — higher up, with a wooden platform suspended over the hillside. The view includes the coastline in the distance. Much less visited.

3. Miradouro da Grota do Inferno — Sete Cidades

The secret of Sete Cidades. Located on the north face of the caldera with an even more intimate perspective over the lakes. The dirt road to get there is a little more adventurous, but the silence and beauty make it worthwhile. Perfect for photography at sunrise.

4. Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo

The panorama over Lagoa do Fogo — the nature reserve in the Água de Pau volcano crater — is breathtaking. The lake appears suddenly when you reach the viewpoint next to the EN5-2A, wrapped in dense vegetation, with waters of a blue that seems unreal.

Note: The lake is often covered in morning fog. If you cannot see it on arrival, wait 30 minutes — it often clears quickly.

5. Miradouro de Santa Iria — North Coast

Nothing prepares people for this view. Here you are on the north coast of São Miguel looking at the wild Atlantic: dark blue sea to the horizon, 200-metre cliffs covered in green, and the sound of waves far below.

How to get there: On the EN1-1a, between Ribeira Grande and Nordeste.

6. Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Paz — Vila Franca do Campo

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz sits at the top of a hill and to get there you must climb 1,000 stone steps between cedars and hydrangeas — about 30 minutes on foot. At the top you find not only the view (with the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo perfectly framed) but a sense of peace that no other place can provide.

7. Ponta do Sossego — Nordeste

Hidden in a free botanical garden with giant hydrangeas and camellia trees, Ponta do Sossego has a particular refinement. Visit during the hydrangea blooming season (May to July) for a truly extraordinary colour spectacle.

8. Pico da Vara — The island's highest point

At 1,103 metres, Pico da Vara is the highest point in São Miguel. Reaching the summit requires a hike of about 3 hours from the village of Achada (PR1-SMI trail), but on a clear day you can see almost the entire island in a 360-degree sweep.

Tip: The summit is often cloud-covered — check the weather forecast before you go. The best time is summer.

9. Miradouro da Vigia das Baleias — Algarvia

On the far northeast of the island, this viewpoint has history: for decades, whale spotters used these elevated posts to sight the great cetaceans. Today it is a tourist observation point with a superb view over the northeast coast. With binoculars, you might even spot dolphins or whales offshore.

10. Ponta do Escalvado — South coast
