Furnas: Complete Guide to São Miguel's Most Fascinating Volcanic Valley

If you have to choose just one place to visit in São Miguel beyond Ponta Delgada, choose Furnas. Here the earth truly boils, the ground bubbles, and at midday cooks come to unearth lunch from the volcanic soil. It is a place where nature is so demonstrative of its power that it is impossible to remain indifferent.

The Furnas valley lies in the eastern part of São Miguel, about 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada. It is an inhabited volcanic caldera — the village of Furnas sits literally inside a dormant crater, surrounded by hot springs, fumaroles and volcanic mud ever since the volcano last entered a period of rest in 1630.

The Caldeiras: where the earth boils

There are two groups of caldeiras in Furnas. The most interesting is located next to Lagoa das Furnas, about 3 km from the village. The caldeiras are fumaroles, hot springs and volcanic mud that bubble to the surface at temperatures between 66 °C and 93 °C. The ground trembles, steam rises in dense columns, and volcanic mud bubbles in slow motion — a demonstration of the Earth's geological force that has no equal in Portugal.

Entry costs around €3. The paths are signposted and you must follow them strictly.

Safety: Never leave the signposted paths. The soil's crust may look solid but can conceal water or mud at extremely high temperatures.

The Furnas Stew: the most famous meal in the Azores

This is the definitive gastronomic experience of São Miguel. Furnas Stew is a stew of meat (beef, pork, chicken), vegetables and cured sausages cooked buried in the volcanic soil for 6 to 7 hours, absorbing the geothermal heat of the earth at around 90 °C.

The process begins before dawn: restaurant staff fill enormous cast-iron pots and bury them in holes in the caldeira soil. Around noon, they arrive with wheelbarrows and unearth the pots. The flavour is unmistakable: the meat is extremely tender and there is a subtle mineral note that comes from the volcanic terrain.

Where to eat

Tony's Bar e Restaurante is probably the most famous — it is right next to the caldeiras. Restaurante Miroma and Restaurante Caldeiras e Vulcões are also highly regarded. To guarantee a table in summer, book at least a day in advance. Furnas Stew is only available at lunchtime.

Terra Nostra Park

Spanning 12 hectares, this botanical garden has existed since 1780 and contains over 600 species of tropical and subtropical plants: bamboo tunnels over 20 metres tall, 5-metre tree ferns and century-old camellias.

At the heart of the garden lies the most famous attraction: a thermal pool of iron-rich water, geothermally heated to 37 °C, of an intense reddish-orange colour. Swimming here is one of the most relaxing and surreal experiences on the island.

Entry: around €10 (includes access to the pool). We recommend arriving when it opens at 9am.

Poça da Dona Beija

Five outdoor thermal pools of ferrous water at temperatures between 25 °C and 39 °C, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation. Open until 11pm — perfect for a night-time swim under the Azorean stars. Entry: around €8. In summer, go before 11am or after 7pm to avoid queues.

Lagoa das Furnas and Miradouro do Pico do Ferro

The lake that gives the valley its name lies 3 km from the village — darker, more mysterious, wrapped in dense vegetation. The Pico do Ferro viewpoint offers the best panoramic view over the entire valley. Well worth the detour, especially in the late afternoon.

How to get there

About 40 km from Ponta Delgada via the EN1-1a heading northeast — approximately 40 minutes by car. There is no practical public transport from Ponta Delgada.

Practical tips

• Book your restaurant for the stew in advance, especially in summer.
• Bring a swimsuit: both Terra Nostra Park and Poça da Dona Beija require a swimsuit and towel.
• The pool water contains a lot of iron — it can stain a white swimsuit. Wear an old or dark-coloured one.
• Plan to arrive at the caldeiras around 11:30am to witness the unearthing of the pots at noon.
• Buy liqueurs and jams in Furnas: the local shops stock homemade products of excellent quality.

Furnas is the geological heart of São Miguel — a place where the island shows without reservation what it means to be a living volcanic island. There is no way to remain indifferent.
